The Challenge
A MedTech company had raised significant capital and was betting on two or three applications, backed by the freedom to operate its patents and technology gave it.
Then the market shifted and competitors emerged. It had to decide where to focus its marketing and its new strategic drive, while managing the financial resources of the business.
The Approach
We conducted an IPRSCORE™ for the company. Monitoring the competitive landscape through citation analysis was a key signal. It identified who was citing the company’s patents, how many of those parties were current competitors, and how many were emerging ones.
That became a key indicator of where the company should focus its future efforts and who it should approach about licensing its IP outside its core market.
The Results
The company chose to commercialise the technology in one key market and to license it out in its non-core markets. This helped it maximise the opportunity while managing the business’s financial resources.
Tracking who cites a company’s patents can show both where to focus commercially and who to license to in non-core markets.
