The Challenge

An AdTech company had spent heavily on R&D and patents, and it wanted to demonstrate the value of that investment to its stakeholders at the next board meeting. A patent count shows how many patents a company holds, but not whether any of them matter. The company needed independent evidence that the spend had created value.

The Approach

We conducted an IPRSCORE™ for the company. It indicated strong patents by identifying open families, meaning at least one active, pending child application kept alive. It also showed the strategy behind them. Keeping a family open is highly valued and considered good IP strategy, and the filing pattern showed this was deliberate. It gave the company flexibility to shape future claims around what the market was doing.

An open family is one of the quantitative signals in the IPRSCORE™ patent score, alongside family size, remaining term and independent claim count.

The Results

The company used the IPRSCORE™ to show that value had been created. The strong patent score and the strengths of the portfolio gave the board and stakeholders evidence for the investment in R&D and patents.

The IPRSCORE™ also generated significant buyer interest. NPE buyers were especially interested in the open family and treated it as a strong indicator of value.
